Joseph McDonough is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker based in New York with over 30 years of experience supporting individuals and families through complex health and emotional challenges. He holds a Master’s in Social Work from Hunter College and is a graduate of the Urban Family Institute’s Family Therapy Programme, affiliated with the Ackerman Institute. Joseph is trained in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing, and Creative Arts Therapy. He has worked with clients from diverse backgrounds—including teenagers, young adults, seniors, and families—with a particular focus on those facing chronic health issues.
Joseph takes a strength-based, person-centred approach to therapy, helping clients identify and overcome barriers so they can move forward with purpose and confidence. He has also served as a clinical supervisor for much of his career, guiding MSW and Mental Health Counselling students from a range of universities. A passionate board game enthusiast, Joseph often incorporates games into therapy as a creative way to foster social skills, self-esteem, and connection.
